What Is The Story About?

Joel, a young child, seeks shelter in an underground bunker with a group of survivors after an apocalypse wipes out the majority of the planet's population. Joel feels trapped on the floor, surrounded by giant, dangerous insects. Joel makes touch with Aimee, a girl he had a crush on, seven years after the apocalypse. Joel agrees to take a risky trip outside the bunker in order to reunite with Aimee, risking his life. The rest of the plot revolves around Joel's success or failure in this endeavour.

Analysis

There are moments when watching Love and Monsters that you feel like you're watching a pandemic movie. It's hard to believe that this film, made before COVID-19, manages to speak to current events, but that is the brilliance of Brian Duffield and Matthew Robinson's wacky, heartfelt screenplay. This is a befuddling, frequently unwieldy mashup of teen dramedy and post-apocalyptic drama that defies categorization, but the way it seamlessly transitions between the two styles is fantastic.

When you think about it, both genres have all the usual trappings, but the way the writers and director Michael Matthews actively play with these conventions and subvert them to ludicrous levels is admirable. And as the storey progresses, several themes emerge: adolescent sexual frustration, past trauma, anxiety about the future, fear of the unknown, and so on. Despite the fact that the film is under two hours long, all of these themes are discussed in the fast-paced narrative, and the creators also borrow ideas from other films like Avatar and Zombieland. It's difficult not to be scared, emotionally overwhelmed, and optimistic about the future while watching this film.

Performances

As Joel, Dylan O'Brien is incredibly likeable and sincere. Since this is essentially Joel's coming-of-age novel, O'Brien's gradual transition is something to keep an eye on. Jessica Henwick does a good job as Aimee. Clyde and Minnow, a pair of survivors who come across Joel on his journey and teach him survival skills, are played superbly by Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt. Cap, the food pirate, is played by Dan Ewing, who is appropriately evil.

Music and Others Departments

The cinematography by Lachlan Milne is adequate, but it is Dan Hennah's production design that truly elevates this bizarre storey.

Highlights

The opening scenes, in which Joel uses voiceover to narrate the state of the world and the bunker, are both funny and touching. Furthermore, the Clyde and Minnow segments are so amazing that Netflix should seriously consider doing a spinoff based on these two characters.

Drawbacks

Before the climax, the script has a minor energy dip.

Did I Enjoy It?

Yes, indeed. I had a smile on my face for the majority of the movie.

Do I Recommend It?

Yes, indeed. This teen zombie apocalypse drama is well worth your time.
