Shei Je Holud Pakhi Season 2 Review

PP Movie Rating:- ** (2 Star/5)

What Is The Story About?

Somnath Maitra, a middle-aged police officer, continues the investigation into the mysterious death of singing superstar Vaidehi, alleging her death is related to the five-year disappearance of his own daughter Mitil. Somnath is reinstated in the police force after being suspended on suspicion of causing Vaidehi's accident, thanks to the intervention of the Home Minister. Somnath sets out to find the truth with the help of ex-colleague Anuradha Mukherjee, and discovers a deadly web of lies and deception surrounding Vaidehi.

Analysis

When the first season of Shei Je Holud Pakhi premiered in 2018, Hoichoi was still figuring out how to be a streaming channel, and it was slightly compelling to watch a middle-aged alcoholic cop try to solve the accident/murder of a teenage singing superstar while still looking for his own missing daughter. Call it the pandemic's impact or a platform's never-ending quest for new material, but Hoichoi may have realised that this storey needed a conclusion. However, this instalment, which concludes the tale of Vaidehi's death, suffers from a lack of direction. Joydeep Mukherjee's direction often appears to dump cold water on Ayan Chakraborti's script and dialogues, which are very good given the first season's simplistic and slow-paced plot.

As a result, there are periods in the eight episodes where you find yourself continuously testing the player's runtime to see how long the episode will take to finish. It's difficult to keep track of the different sins committed around the late Vaidehi because the final denouement, which spans two episodes, is stretched out a lot and brings forth too many revelations (even though some of them are given proper buildup throughout the season). In the screenplay, there's also a twist that echoes Park Chan-2003 wook's Korean film Oldboy, but the homage's shock value is spoiled by needless melodrama. This last farewell would have been an utter tragedy if it hadn't been for the veterans.

Performances

Vaidehi by Tridha Choudhury is a favourite among the youngsters. Her character may have seemed artificial and lustful in the first season, but the script in this season benefits her character by filling in several holes and revealing many truths about her. Prantik Banerjee does a good job as Rik, the spoiled son of the Police Commissioner who is hiding a lot of secrets. As Bubun, a member of Rik's band, Soumendra Bhattacharya does a good job.

The seniors, on the other hand, save this drab season. As Somnath, Saswata Chatterjee doesn't put a foot wrong, though his sardonic demeanour sometimes overlaps with that of another iconic character he plays, Shabor Dasgupta. Rupanjana Mitra, who plays the no-nonsense Anuradha Mukherjee, is a good match for him. With glee, Koushik Sen portrays the devilish charmer Diganta Bose, while Sudip Mukherjee as the Commissioner is silently threatening. Vaidehi's crazy mother Karuna is played well by Bidipta Chakraborty, and pub owner Jonaki is played well by Chandreyee Ghosh.

Music and Others Departments

Tuban's cinematography is adequate, as is Moloy Laha's editing. The music and background score by Upali Chattopadhyay and Raja Narayan Deb can be a little too much at times.

Highlights

The best parts of this season aren't about the core mystery or Somnath's daughter, believe it or not. The Somnath-Anuradha relationship feels genuine and believable, and both Saswata and Rupanjana portray these characters as if their past haunts them and influences their friendship.

Drawbacks

The conclusion is dragged out over two episodes, which creates a feeling of monotony for the viewer, and even Mitil's fate is revealed in a haphazard manner.

Did I Enjoy It?

I particularly enjoyed the scenes with Saswata and Rupanjana. There's nothing much worth writing about.

Do I Recommend It?

You can watch this only if you want to see Vaidehi's tale come to a conclusion. Otherwise, this season is a letdown.
